Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEVEN SHEWCHUK It is with sadness that we announce the sudden and accidental death of Steven Shewchuk on September 14, 2008. Steve was a loving and devoted husband to Jeanette and a supportive father to Yvonne and Warren (Wendy). He will be especially missed by his grandchildren Benjamin and Abigail, whom he cherished dearly. Steve was predeceased by his parents, John and Tekla Shewchuk and older brother Orest; also left to mourn him are his sisters Sylvia (Thad) Snow, Vera (Ray) Chernecki, a brother Isadore (Lesia) Shewchuk of Edmonton and sister-in-law Eva of Portage la Prairie. Numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family also mourn his passing. Steve was born on February 25, 1947 in Dauphin, Manitoba and spent his early years on his parent's farm in Garland, Manitoba. Steve and Jeanette married in June 1968, and moved to Winnipeg, where Steve was employed at Canada Packers until joining the Winnipeg Police Force in 1970. Steve loved to travel and was always eager for adventure. Together he and Jeanette travelled throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico with their two young children. In later years, Steve and Jeanette continued to travel, camping on the beaches of the Baja Peninsula or exploring the dunes with friends in Arizona. Claiming to have his grandchildren in mind, Steve bought a snowmobile and an ATV. With a happy child on the seat behind him, arms wrapped around his waist, an equally happy Gedo shared his love of adventure with another generation. After his retirement from the Winnipeg Police Force in 1998, Steve worked as a Peace Office for the Ministry of Finance. This part time work gave him the freedom to do the things he loved most and he cherished the time he and Jeanette spent together biking, walking or cross country skiing through Beaudry Park. Together Steve and Jeanette designed and built four homes, the most recent being their dream home overlooking the Assiniboine River in St. Francois Xavier. Steve was a man who loved a celebration. He loved any opportunity to be with friends and family, telling stories or sharing jokes. He loved to dance and was always first on his feet when the music started. An avid outdoorsman, Steve looked forward to his annual fishing and hunting trips. Steve was a big man in every way: in stature, in heart, and in generosity. His wonderful bear hugs were a physical expression of his love. His passing was unexpected, leaving all of us who loved him bereft at losing such an enormous presence in our lives. A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20 at Mosaic Funeral Chapel, 1839 Inkster Blvd. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the MS Society of Manitoba, the Canadian cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
