VIRGINIA ROSS SHAW (nee GEORGE) Virginia passed away peacefully at Concordia Hospital on Sunday, September 21, 2008. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Anabel George; her husband, Edward (Ted); and her sister, Inas Helen George. Virginia is survived and lovingly remembered by her son, Jim (Susan); daughter, Sally Dick (Don); and sister, Mercedes Steeds (Ken, deceased). She will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Jamie and Jennifer Shaw, and Paul and Andrew Dick; her step-grandchildren, Barbro Dick (Tim Steadman), Tanis Dick (Rob Margeson), Doug Dick (Sherry), and John Dick (Britt Purchuk) and their children; as well as her niece, Virginia Mushumanski (Lorne), and nephews, Ken and Ron Steeds (Angela), and their children. Virginia was born in Winnipeg on March 9, 1924. She was the second daughter of James and Anabel. Her father was a prominent physician and surgeon. Summers at her parents' cottage at Matlock were a source of many pleasant memories for Virginia. She attended St. Mary's Academy and Riverbend School. Upon graduating, Virginia enrolled in a business college, and then was employed in her father's medical office until she married her beloved Ted on August 6, 1949. Virginia was very devoted to her family. She and Ted were married for almost 55 years and truly were soul-mates. She was a loving and caring companion for Ted and they had a wonderful life together. Virginia was tireless in her efforts to support and encourage her children and grandchildren in all of their various endeavours. She loved to hear about their accomplishments and aspirations. Her practical advice, kindness and empathy were a very positive influence in the lives of both her family and friends. Virginia enjoyed many enduring friendships during her lifetime. She took a genuine interest in her friends and worked diligently at maintaining close relationships. She was a gifted letter writer, a good phone buddy , always remembered birthdays and anniversaries, and never forgot to send a thank-you note or to express gratitude otherwise. She was a trusted and reliable friend with a delightful sense of humour. Her memory will be cherished by all those who knew her well. In addition, Virginia will be remembered for her service to the community. In her younger years, when she and Ted lived in Woodstock, Ontario, she was a Kinette. Later on, she served for many years on the Board of the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. She also played an active role in the Women's Auxilliary of the East Kildonan Chapter of the Order of DeMolay. Virginia fully participated in life. She had high standards and worked hard to fulfill her various responsibilities. She kept abreast of current affairs, enjoyed vacations with her family, loved Broadway musicals and had an abiding affection for dogs. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg, commencing at 10:30 a.m., with Reverend Allan Farris officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Virginia's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 0K6. The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to Dr. John Rabson and Dr. June James for the dedicated care and treatment they rendered to Virginia over the years. We also wish to extend our sincere thanks to the doctors (particularly Drs. Tomy and Strumpher), nurses and staff in the Emergency and Intensive Care Units at Concordia Hospital for their exceptional care, compassion and support.
