JEAN M. DICK (nee MANSELL) August 22, 1922 - October 5, 2008 Peacefully on Sunday morning, October 5, 2008 with her family at her side. Mom was predeceased by her husband John (Jack) Dick in 1987. She is survived by her son Kris, his wife Suzanne and her grandchildren, Graham, Colin and Rebecca who she loved dearly. Mom was born in Chatham, Ontario and moved with her parents to Winnipeg at an early age. She grew up in Norwood Grove, Winnipeg. She was an avid swimmer and earned her gold medal for life saving. Prior to marrying Jack in 1952, mom worked in the millinery industry in Winnipeg. As a part of her work travels she fondly told the story of her first airplane ride to New York in 1948. Mom and Dad built a house together and snuck off to the countryside around Anola, Manitoba in the early 1970s. The vision of Mom thirty feet above the ground putting shingles on the roof is still a vivid memory to her friends, along with plucking chickens and working in the garden. Mom had the opportunity to travel and enjoyed many trips to Barbados and an adventure to Lesotho with her long-time friend Lorraine. Mom was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, had been a worthy matron and this year received her 50 year pin. She was a regular theatregoer, enjoyed the cottage on the Winnipeg River and was the secretary of the Springfield Agricultural Society for many years until just recently. Mom, who never spoke an unkind word, was thought of as a kind and gentle person by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held at Transcona Cemetery, Friday, October 10 at 1:00 p.m. Please meet at the front gates at 12:45 p.m. Following the service friends are invited back to Kris and Sue's home. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Kassis and all of the staff at the Beausejour Hospital who were very caring and made mom's time there comforting. We would also like to thank the Springfield Home Care Team for providing mom with the best support over the past year. In lieu of flowers, it was Mom's wish that a contribution to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice could be made in her name.
