Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHAZEN VERNON JEFFERS 1923 - 2008 Peacefully, on Monday, October 6, 2008, Hazen passed away at the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital in Eriksdale, MB at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family. Hazen is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Lilja; son Cliff (Kim), son Tim (Linda), daughter Dawn (Les), son Mike (Tracy), son Mark (Nicole); special niece Donna Hasinoff (Lorne); grandchildren, Evan, Tyler (Natalie), Matthew, Shannon, Ben, Chris, Dylan, Erinn, Kevin and Kyle; sisters-in-law, Thelma, Helga and Ruth; brother-in-law Ernest (Dorothy) along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Grace; brother Bud; sister Kay; son-in-law Ray LeStrat; in-laws, Kjartan Johnson, Corky Knox, Jim and Ollie Willetts, Steini and Ethel Olafson and Fred Lawson. Hazen was born in St. Boniface on November 30, 1923. He grew up in Eriksdale, Manitoba. In 1943 he enlisted in the Canadian Army and fought with the 8th New Brunswick Hussars in North Africa and Italy. After the war, he returned to Eriksdale where, in 1946, he took employment with A. J. Smith and Sons, latterly G. K. Smith and Sons, with whom he worked until his retirement in 1983. Hazen took great pride in his family and was a devoted grandfather. As a young man he greatly enjoyed all sports, especially hockey. Throughout his life he was very involved in supporting the community, in any way he could, especially including the 35 years of service as a volunteer firefighter. A celebration of Hazen's life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2008 at the Eriksdale Recreational Centre with Melanie Kauppila officiating. A private family interment will take place prior to the service at the Eriksdale Municipal Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr. Neil Burnet and the staff of the Home Care program, the Lundar Personal Care Home and the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital for their loving care. Also to the doctors and nurses at CancerCare, especially the paramedics who did everything they could to make his many trips to Winnipeg as comfortable as possible.
