FRED EDGAR ROY After a courageous battle with cancer, Fred Roy, husband of Gladys Roy, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2008. Left with wonderful memories are his wife and best friend of 51 years Gladys; sons Jeff (Maureen; Dylan and Braeden), Greg (Brenda; Michael and Charlie), Marty (Joanne; Kyla and Caitlyn); and one brother Paul. Fred was predeceased by his mother Violet and his sister Hazel. Fred proudly served 50 years with the fire service. Retiring after 34 years with the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1992 with the rank of Capitan and then started 16 years with the McKenzie Clearwater Bay Fire Team. Fred spent countless hours at the Isaac Brock Community Centre, in particular Shakey Jakes, sharpening skates for all the children in the area and providing inspiration to many young hockey players. After retirement we moved to our home at the lake (the “Rusty Fox”), his favorite place in the world – Clytie Bay, Ontario. The summers were filled with fish fries, shore lunches, teaching the Grandkids about bird watching, fishing derbies and Mexican parties – complete with margaritas and sombreros. Getting away in the winter was one of the best parts of retiring – leaving the snow for the sun-filled party days of Lake Havasu, Arizona. Whether it was biking around the island, voting for the “King of the Park” or golfing with all the wonderful friends we met over the years, Fred was always the life of the party – singing and rattling the ice cubes in his glass to signify “Happy Hour” had begun. Fred was truly a talented individual. After his one and only attempt at building a crooked fence Fred jumped at the chance to build a magnificent family summer cottage – complete with a 25 foot stone wall, stained glass windows, stone fireplace, beautiful stone stairs and the most amazing carved welcome sign – it looks like you are entering a five star resort. Fred did not allow his diagnosis of cancer to consume his life. He was a strong, warm hearted man who just had a natural way of making people around him feel good, and his unique nature will be missed greatly by all. Always telling jokes (often the same ones that worked before), and never hesitating to hug anyone at first sight, he will be remembered for his quick contagious smile and love of life. Special thanks to Dr. Ralph Wong, Cathy, Dawn and the Chemo ladies, Dr. Rick Ross and his lovely wife/nurse Trixie, the Kenora Hospital and Dr. Buzz Pederson. A celebration of life will take place on Monday October 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at The United Church in Meadowood (1111 Dakota Street). Please no flowers. Donations can be made to the Winnipeg Fire Fighters Burn Fund or the McKenzie Clearwater Bay Fire Team. Thanks to Wojcik’s for their help.Fred is in the faces and in the hearts of all of us he left behind. And those of us who were lucky enough to call him husband, Dad, Grampa and friend will never forgot he was here. We are so proud of you Fred for your very courageous fight. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you. WOJCIK'S FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM 2157 PORTAGE AVENUE 897 - 4665
