FLORENCE MILDRED BROWN 1912 - 2008 Today we mourn the loss of a great lady, Florence Mildred Brown, who passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008 at the Health Sciences Centre after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 95. Our Mother was born in Winnipeg. She was the 10th child in a family of 12 children, seven girls and five boys. Her parents were Robert and Elizabeth Ann Holland. Her love of gardening remained with her her entire life, inspired by a multi-school gardening competition where she won the first place medal at the age of 12 years. At 16 she went to work as a nanny/housekeeper for a friend of the family caring for a set of triplets, She remained at this position until she was married. She married David Brown in 1940 and had a son Robert in 1942. They were married for 57 years. Early in her marriage, our Mother cared for many foster children, two of them into their teens. After her family was grown, she worked for many years in the hospitality industry. Mom travelled extensively, visiting England, Panama, Jamaica, Barbados, Hawaii, and many places in the U.S. She resided at Lions Place Seniors Residence until her illness. Our mother was predeceased by her husband in 1998. She was also predeceased by her six sisters, her four brothers, and her foster son Bert. Mom is survived by her son Bob (Sigrid), daughter Mary (Ed), brother William (Nora) and grandsons Darren (Marlene), Kevin (Karen), Dean (Regina), and numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to acknowledge her lifelong friend of 61 years Nan Matheson. Thank you to the Health Sciences Centre GH4 and GD5 for the excellent care Mom received and for making her last days peaceful and comfortable. Pallbearers will be Kevin Paquin, Darren Brown, Doug Benstead, Tom Adair and Jon and Jordan Van Vliet. Honorary pallbearer is Dean Paquin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. A celebration and remembrance of Florence's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave, on Saturday October 25, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
