WALDEMAR (VAL) MENGE 1930-2008 Peacefully, on Friday, October 17, 2008 after a lengthy illness, Waldemar (Val) Menge died at the Charleswood Care Centre. Val was born on March 17, 1930 in Borodino, Bessarabia to Luise and Daniel and immigrated to Canada in 1956 to settle in Winnipeg. Val was trained as a machinist and tool and die maker, and worked at this trade for Canadian Tool & Die Ltd., where he rose to the position of toolroom foreman. He held this position until his retirement in 1995. He married Armella Luke of Ste. Rose du Lac in December, 1959, and they had five children together: Dolores Rintoul (Harry – deceased); Mark; Robert (Pauline); Peter (Lisa); and Glenn (Sarrah). Val was a larger than life personality. He took great pride in his work at which he excelled. He was an avid reader, with a particular interest in history, a polished dancer in his younger days, and he also enjoyed bowling and golf. He loved to laugh and had a wonderful deep singing voice. He unfortunately suffered a severe stroke in 1999, from which he never fully recovered. Val is predeceased by his parents Daniel (1988) and Luise (1992), and by Armella in 2006. Val leaves five grandchildren: Siobhan, Tristan, Linnaea, Ryan and Nicholas, to whom he was known as “Opa”; and four siblings: sisters Erna Hintze and Ella Vrkljan of Calgary, Alma Will of Minneapolis, brother Helmut Menge of Texas; and numerous nephews and nieces. He also leaves his good friend, Monica Bonk of Vancouver, B.C. We would like to express our appreciation to the staff of the Charleswood Care Centre for the care and attention they gave Dad during his residence there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, across from Brookside Cemetery. Schlaf schon Opa.
