STEPHANIE PERRY It is with sadness that we announce that Stephanie Perry (née Galay) passed away on Friday, October 24, 2008, in Winnipeg, aged 81 years. Stephanie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bernard, in 2000. She is survived by her loving children, Kirk, Kenn, Alison Askewe (Robert) and Susan, of Winnipeg, and Deborah, of Toronto. Stephanie also leaves her devoted granddaughter, Sarah Perry-Wolbaum (Curtis), of Swift Current. Stephanie is also survived by her dear sisters, Eileen, of Calgary, and Marie, of Powassan, and numerous nieces and nephews. Stephanie was born near Winnipegosis, Manitoba on August 18, 1927, and was second youngest of 11 children. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Matt and Nick, and sisters, Anne, Helen, Jessie, Nellie and Kay. Stephanie and Bernard were married in Winnipeg in 1948, and enjoyed 52 years together. In her younger days, Stephanie worked as a long distance operator at MTS. She enjoyed playing women's baseball with the St. Vital Tigerettes in the late 1940s. Her love of baseball would endure for decades - she was especially pleased when her favourite Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series not once, but twice. On the home front, she was an excellent cook who was always there when the kids came home from school, and yet also found the time to assist friends and neighbours, and fundraise for various charities, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She sponsored an African child through World Vision for several years, up until her passing. Although she had her share of trials in raising a family, Stephanie always made time to call and write to others when they needed a friend. A devout Christian, she held strong beliefs to live by, yet always respected the varying views of others. Stephanie loved to write poetry and short stories, and in her senior years, joined a theatre group as an actor, helping to workshop and perform a touring production of a play examining the challenges faced by senior women. A musician as well, she would bring out her mandolin on family occasions. Stephanie moved out of the family home in 2002, and spent the past few years residing at Deer Lodge Centre, in Winnipeg. The family would like to thank all our relatives and friends for their love and support, and send a special thank you to the staff on Lodge 7 at Deer Lodge Centre. A celebration of Stephanie's life will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Avenue, (entrance on Aubrey Street) at 10:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Thomson In the Park , 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
