Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALEXANDRA MCAMMOND Slipped away peacefully on November 2, 2008 after a brief stay at Victoria General Hospital. She is survived by her son John (Dina), grandchildren Ian (Neena) and Sarah, her sister Janet Weintz, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Michael and Peter Homick and by her sister Helen Kudla. She was born on December 8, 1922 near Garland, Manitoba to John and Juhasia Homick, and grew up in a number of small Manitoba communities. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to Winnipeg and worked as a nanny before entering training as a Registered Nurse. During the Second World War and while in residence at Dauphin General Hospital, she won the General Proficiency Award three years in a row. While her brother Michael convalesced from injuries received in combat, she came down to Winnipeg to be his special nurse at Deer Lodge Hospital. She subsequently traveled and lived in cities across Canada, the contiguous United States and the then Territory of Alaska, settling in Vancouver in 1954. It was there, in the early 1960s that she returned to her profession on a part-time basis, working first at a nursing home and then at the Willow Chest Clinic of Vancouver General Hospital. In 1964, she moved to Winnipeg, where she would spend the rest of her life. For the next two decades she nursed full-time, first in the maternity ward at the old Concordia Hospital on Desalaberry Avenue, and then at the Misericordia, again in maternity. She retired in the early 1980s, and busied herself with knitting, crocheting and gardening. Throughout her retirement and down to the end, she had for companionship a series of large, scary dogs that each in turn immediately became devoted to her, and gentle in her presence. In 1989, she took a renewed interest in cooking and particularly in baking, the main beneficiaries her grandchildren and many of their friends. A very strong, and very kind woman, she will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. Cremation has already taken place, and a memorial service will be held at Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Avenue at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, November 6, reception to follow. There will be a private interment at a later date.
