Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD RICHARD (RICK) BARNES January 30, 1957 - October 21, 2008 After a courageous battle with cancer, Rick passed away at his home in Thompson, Manitoba. His wife Jennifer, his sister Jo-Anne and brother-in-law Brian were at his side. Rick was predeceased by his parents Edward (Ted) Barnes and Josephine (Jessie) Barnes. Rick was born in Winnipeg, where he lived most of his life. After graduating from high school in Winnipeg, Rick attended both the University of Manitoba and Red River Community College where he completed an honours diploma in Computer Analyst/Programmer. Rick was employed by Fort Garry Hotel, Cybershare Ltd., Sperry Inc., Lew Miles Las Vegas Charters, Champs KFC, and IBM before a new employment opportunity with INCO brought him to Thompson, Manitoba in July 2001. Rick was respected as an employee for his hard work, attention to detail and his willingness to help in any way he could. Rick's family was very important to him. He was a loving Dad to Sydney, his best girl . Rick would drive from Thompson to Winnipeg to take her out for Halloween. Sydney could count on her Dad and they shared a similar sense of humour. Rick's only sibling was his sister Jo-Anne. They were very close as favourite best sister and favourite best brother . Rick shared his sense of humour with his brother-in-law Brian Marshall, and was close to his nephew Neil Marshall. Rick was a gentle man who was known for his unique sense of humour, he loved to drive, he loved animals, especially dogs; he was an avid guitar player, and he enjoyed music, poetry, photography and TV, especially Star Trek, and other science fiction. Rick was always very generous. He loved to have people around him. Christmas was his favourite time of the year; which gave him the opportunity to extend his generosity to his family and friends. Rick's family would like to thank their many friends, hospital staff and home care staff for the excellent care Rick received. They would like to give a special thank-you to Fraser and Colita MacTavish, Bob Bakker, and Michael Kober for all of their help and support throughout Rick's illness. Rick is survived by his devoted wife Jennifer, loving daughter Sydney, sister and brother-in-law Jo-Anne and Brian Marshall, his nephew Neil Marshall, Neil's wife Theresa and their four children. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Elsie Bergen, and Jennifer's sisters Jeanette Bergen and Kelly and Huw Hughes and their families. If desired donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, CancerCare Manitoba, the Thompson General Hospital, or the Humane Society. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, November 14, 2008 at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Avenue West, Winnipeg, MB. We love you and we will miss you terribly.
