ANASTAZIA (NETTIE) ZURAWECKI At Fred Douglas Lodge, on Monday, November 10th, 2008, after a devastating and declining struggle with Alzheimer's Disease, our precious mother passed away peacefully. Anastazia was born in Perespa, Province of Sokol, Poland, (now Ukraine) and came to Canada with her family at the age of 11 years in 1929. Her early Canadian years were lived in Saskatchewan. She followed her sister, Ksenia, to Winnipeg in the late thirties to work. She met and married Michael Zurawecki in 1938, and they made Winnipeg their home during their 39 year marriage. As a widow for 30 plus years, Anastazia maintained an active, social and fiercely independent lifestyle. She was strong, energetic and always friendly. She would have been 90 years old on December 29th. Left to remember her with love are her daughter Eleanor (Victor) Kowalewich; her son, Terry Zurawecki; grandsons Val-Michael (Shelley) Kowalewich of Edmonton; Stephen (Jolene) Zurawecki; granddaughter Tracy (Nick) Giancola; great-grandson Marco Giancola; all in Winnipeg; sisters Mary Dilay and Anne Pokatylo of White Rock, B.C.; sister-in-law Bessie Dubyk of Battleford, Saskatchewan and nieces and nephews and their families in Saskatchewan and B.C. Anastazia was predeceased by her husband Mike; brother Joseph Dubyk; sister Ksenia Oleynik and brothers-in-law, Bill Oleynik and Peter Dilay. Nettie, as she was most frequently called, was a devoted and kind-hearted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for her delicious turkey dinners which she hosted frequently just because she wanted to - no special occasion was necessary. Her Ukrainian delicacies were unsurpassed, particularly her sauerkraut buns (pyroshki) which she made for family and friends and many a bridal shower during her lifetime. She had a phenomenal green thumb! She loved gardening and maintained a large garden right till her 85th year. This led to canning, pickling and freezing, and care packages for family and friends. One never left her home empty-handed. Her generosity was well-known. Her greatest talent was petit-point and cross-stitch embroidery which kept her busy during the winter months. She has left a legacy of beautiful pictures, both traditional and unusual pieces for her family to treasure. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred at Elmwood Cemetery where her husband's remains are buried. The family asks that those who knew our wonderful mother, and how much she loved flowers, could best pay tribute to her by giving someone they dearly love a beautiful bouquet. The family wishes to thank all the staff on Evergreen Unit at Fred Douglas Lodge for their care and compassion these past two years. Should friends desire, donations may be made in her memory to Fred Douglas Lodge, 1075 Burrows Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2X 0B8.
