CARITAS (CARRIE) WERNER Peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer, Caritas Werner went to be with her Lord and Saviour, at the age of 81. Her memory will be treasured by her husband, Erich Werner; her brothers, Martin Schulz (Katharina), Hanns-Eduard Schulz (Ingrid), Roger Schulz (Helen); Doris Schulz and their families; the Werner children: Waltraud and Rudy Jede, Juergen and Dagmar Werner, Rudi and Lesley Werner, 15 grand-children and seven great-grandchildren. Caritas was predeceased by her parents, Wilhelm and Gertrud Schulz and brother, Theophil Schulz. Caritas was born in Berlin, Germany on December 10, 1926 and was raised in a loving Christian home. She accepted Jesus as her personal Saviour in 1962. During the Second World War her whole family was separated but eventually were reunited again. After her studies were completed, Caritas became a government officer at the main postal station in Hanover, Germany. After a number of years she gave up her secure position and immigrated alone to Perth, Australia where she found employment at the Royal Perth Hospital. Later her youngest brother and parents joined her in Australia. In 1970, Caritas left for Switzerland and worked in hospitals in Bern. In 1974 Caritas, together with her parents, immigrated to Canada. From 1974 until her retirement in 1986, Caritas was employed by the University of Manitoba and worked as Executive Assistant to the University and Hospital, Department Head of Surgery. Although Caritas always loved to work in her various job responsibilities, she was thankful that God had an even better plan for her. On April 23, 1983 she married Erich Werner, giving her a loving Christian husband and a wonderful instant family. Caritas quickly became very near and dear to the Werner/Jede family and we enjoyed many special times together. In April, 2008 Erich and Caritas celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary. Caritas enjoyed travelling and had visited many countries in Europe, as well as Greece, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Egypt and later with Erich, enjoyed many holidays in Hawaii, Florida, Germany and others. Caritas conquered breast cancer in 1991 but in the fall of 2007 was diagnosed with thymus cancer. The family gratefully acknowledges the excellent care of Dr. Sheila Domke, as well as the doctors, nurses and staff at the Manitoba Cancer Centre, particularly Dr. S. Navaratham and Dr. S. Ahmed (Oncologists), Dr. S. Parham and Dr. L. Tan (Thoracic surgeons), Dr. Lamba and staff at Health Sciences Centre. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Program and home care. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Road with viewing prior to the service. A fellowship meal will follow with interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, ON 109-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or to a charity of one's choice.
