MARGARET JANE LONG (nee CULLEN) April 16, 1912 - November 18, 2008 It is with sadness that the family of Margaret Long announces her passing after a long and blessed life. She was predeceased by her husband George, in 1982, parents William and Ann Cullen, and siblings, Ann Booth, John Cullen, Martha Miller and William Cullen. She is survived by her children, Kathleen (John) Norris, William (Joy) Long, Richard Long, Robert (Phyllis) Long; brother-in-law Tom Miller; sister-in-law Jane Cullen, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Margaret was born and raised in Brandon, Manitoba. She was a conscientious student graduating with honours from grade 12 and went on to attend Normal School in Winnipeg. At age 18 she commenced her teaching career in a one room nine grade rural school in Winnipegosis. During the Depression she continued teaching in Langruth. She subsequently taught in Flin Flon and it is there that she met her future husband George. They were married in Flin Flon in 1939 and eventually moved to Winnipeg in 1945. Margaret and George had four children who were all encouraged to pursue their scholastic endeavours. Values meant a great deal to George and Margaret, who did their best to pass these on to their children. While raising her family, Margaret continued to teach part-time in Winnipeg at Lord Selkirk, Champlain and Ashland Schools. During these years she was a wonderful home-maker and her children will always remember the many happy summers spent at the family cottage at Victoria Beach. Margaret was an avid reader who loved history. She enjoyed classical music and was an active member of the John Black Memorial United Church. Upon retirement, Margaret spent many years as a volunteer at the Manitoba Museum and on the Board of Directors of the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to her extended family and friends, her physicians and the staff of the St. Boniface Hospital, Vista Park Lodge, Victoria Hospital, Wellington Seniors Residence, Home Care and We Care for the kind and caring attention they gave Margaret over the past years. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway at 1:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Children's Hospital Research Foundation or a charity of their own choice.
