ELMA EVELINE SCHMIDT (nee PETZNIK) Elma peacefully passed away November 14, 2008 in Victoria, BC surrounded by family. She leaves her loving daughter Barbara (Rick) of Victoria, sisters Ruth (Doug) and Irma (Bill) of Toronto, sisters-in-law Mabel and Gwen along with nieces, nephews, and caring friends and neighbors who will miss her dearly and forever cherish her memory. Mitzie, her precious cat and companion, will also miss her devotion. She was predeceased by her parents Emilie and David, husband Gus, brothers Oscar and Wally, sister Freda and a baby sister. Elma was born November 24, 1919 in Libau, MB where she and Gus were married in 1948 and spent many years farming. In 1983 they moved to Selkirk, MB to enjoy a well-deserved retirement which included travel and frequent visits with their daughter. An extremely devoted mother and wife, and a wonderful sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend, she touched many lives and hearts with her genuine warmth, hospitality and generosity. Mom loved the land and appreciated the beauty of nature, God's creatures and the simple pleasures of life. Her greatest passion was gardening and her flowers always gave her much pride and joy. She was spirited, hard-working, endearing, strong in faith and will and always eager to share the bounty of her garden and beautiful knitting talents. A celebration of Elma's life will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Selkirk, MB on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Gelhorn officiating. Her family welcomes your presence. Gilbart's Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
