SERGIU (SERGE) KITTNER Peacefully, on November 18, 2008, Sergiu (Serge) Kittner died at age 83 at the Riverview Health Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba, following a struggle with cancer. Serge was born in Focsani, Vrancea County, Romania, on April 15, 1925. He was only seven when his mother, Esther (nee Mendel), died from typhus. Serge always considered himself blessed to have had a loving step-mother, Clara (nee Solomon), who raised him in Bucharest. Serge completed school in Bucharest in 1944, and also took singing and violin lessons. Serge met Vivi Nurnberg, the love of his life, over 65 years ago in 1943. They were married in Temple Coral in Bucharest on January 27, 1946. During the Second World War, Serge endured compulsory service in forced labour camps. In 1961, he and Vivi moved to Haifa, Israel, where he worked very hard in the concrete industry. In June 1963, they emigrated to Winnipeg, where they were reunited with family. Serge began his career at Rice Sportswear, where his first job was mopping the floor. He was steadily promoted through the years, and retired in 1994 as production manager. Serge and Vivi enjoyed travelling to the Abano Spa in Italy (their favourite), Japan, Turkey, Switzerland, Monte Carlo, France, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, California, Holland, Greece, and England. Serge was most content when surrounded by family and friends, and was known for speaking at special functions. He was close to his brothers, and a father and grandfather figure to many. As the eldest, Serge felt responsible for helping family and was generous, strong-willed, and jovial. He enjoyed playing cards, telling jokes, and singing. Serge will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Vivi, nephews Bradley and Mark Kittner of Winnipeg, nieces Adina (Doran) Laks of Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Simona (Shay) Yaniv of Petach-Tikva, Israel, two great-nieces and three great-nephews and their families, sisters-in-law Miriam (Nana) Oberman of Petach-Tikva, Israel, Sylvia and Sarlota (Charlotte) Kittner of Winnipeg, as well as cousins and friends. Serge grieved deeply the losses of his infant son in 1968, his mother, Esther, in 1932, father Leon in 1964, step-mother Clara in 1999, brothers Misu (Mike) in 1991 and Fanel (Fred) in 1996. The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Edward St. Godard and staff of Riverview for their considerate care. We also greatly appreciate those who attended the funeral, called, visited, sent cards, brought food, or helped in some way. We extend a special thank you to our friends Abdul and Adriana, and to Rabbi Larry Lander, the pallbearers, and cemetery staff. The funeral was held on November 20, 2008, at Congregation Etz Chayim, followed by interment in the family plot at Bnay Abraham Cemetery. Shiva is observed at Vivi's home until Tuesday, November 25. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
