Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATHARINA WARKENTIN October 13, 1907 - November 22, 2008 Katharina Warkentin, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, was called to heaven to be with her Lord whom she loved, trusted and served throughout her many years on earth. She was born in Steintahl, Ukraine to Heinrich and Maria Huebert (nee Wiens). She grew up in a loving family who in 1912 moved to Tschongrau, Krimea. In 1928 she married Franz Warkentin, and in 1929 they were blessed with their only child Franz (Frank). In 1937, her husband of nine years was deported to Siberia, never to be seen again. She spoke many times of how she looked forward to their reunion in heaven. In 1941 a group of mostly women and children were forcefully evacuated from their homes to be shipped to Asia. The train car they were on was bombed by the Germans, which caused them to escape from it and flee. They made their way westward into German hands, then towards Poland where they lived for one year, and from there to West Germany. After three years in Germany, she and her son Frank immigrated to Canada. She lived in Winkler, then Winnipeg, and in 1953 moved to Newton. From Newton she moved back to Winnipeg again in 1962. Her family was her joy. She would love to visit with us, and especially enjoyed her times coming back to Newton to be with family there. She loved the outdoors, especially gardening, and would also knit, crochet, bake and sew. She also loved playing games, doing puzzles, and reading through her Bible each year. She gave so much of her time to her granddaughters and their families. We will forever treasure all these memories. Katharina was predeceased by her husband Franz, grandson Frankie, and grandson-in-law, David Toews, as well as all her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son Frank (Ruth), granddaughters Loraine Toews and children Stephanie Greenslade (Kelly), Justin, Julene Toews-Dewis (Jay), Esther Klassen (Willie) and children Tiphanie Kroeker (Wally), Janalee Bell (Chris), Zacharie (Melodie), Julianne Dick (Brad) and children Jenessa and Braden, as well as five great-great-grandchildren. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at fourth floor Concordia Place, as well as her dear niece Mary Wiebe who lovingly cared for her in the last years of her life. Viewing will be held between 10:30 and 11:00 with the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Place, 1000 Molson St. on Wednesday November 26, 2008.
