CECIL JOHN (SONNY) VOISEY 1951-2008 It is with very deep and saddened hearts, that our family must announce the passing of Sonny Voisey, a loving son, brother, uncle, father and grandfather. Sonny passed away in his sleep at home on November 24, 2008 just two months before his 58th birthday. Cecil John (Sonny) Voisey was born in Churchill, Manitoba on January 22, 1951, the first son of John and Francis Voisey. Sonny was an avid sportsman, who excelled in hockey and baseball but also had a passionate love affair with nature. Sonny's love of the outdoors was instilled in him at an early age by his father Johnny, a master of the northern frontier. Johnny passed on his skills of the north to Sonny and his brothers and together with their dad, and sometimes their friends, they spent many nights on the tundra while hunting and fishing. Countless humorous stories were often shared with other family members and friends as a result of these expeditions. Sonny was a very keen learner and at a relative early age obtained his level 1 engineer's certification while employed at Port Churchill. Sonny later changed his career focus and earned his journeyman carpentry certification. However, this career was cut short in 1984 by an unfortunate encounter with a polar bear while out on the tundra. The injuries he sustained soon left him crippled with arthritis and unable to work. Sonny never lost his zest for life or his love for his friends and family especially his two children Clinton and Candice. He was also especially close to his mother Francis who was also one of his best friends. He always acknowledged her birthdays and other special occasions with a call or letter, which she treasured deeply and often shared with the family. Sonny is survived by his son Clinton (Tu), grandchildren Jaremy and Veronica of Seattle, WA, his daughter Candace also of Seattle, WA., mother Francis Voisey of Lac du Bonnet MB, sisters Pat (Real) Ouellette of Selkirk MB, Grace Clark of Winnipeg MB, Emily (Mel) Althouse of Prince George BC, Connie (Curtis) Dancyt of Lac du Bonnet MB and one brother Sam (Donna) Voisey of Dauphin MB. Sonny is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many cousins. Sonny was predeceased by his brother David in 1973 and his father John in 1977. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service in honour of Sonny's life will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Canadian Holy Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, Churchill MB. Boardman/Northland Funeral Service of Thompson MB in care of arrangements in co-operation with Gilbarts Funeral Home of Selkirk MB.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I lived in Churchill from 1953-1966 and went to school with Sonny and hung out with him up until the day my family moved to BC. My last dinner in Churchill was goose dinner at Sonny's house. My belated condolences to his friends and family. - Posted by: Mervin Smith (friend) on: Jan 13, 2012
