GARY ALTON MACKAY January 23, 1950 November 25, 2008 It is with the deepest sorrow we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our dear, dear Gary - beloved husband of Rita van Leeuwen, loving father to Terri Lynn, Meghan, Jessica, Mia, Mandy, Ava, Shannon and Jillian (Grant), and adoring grandfather to Zoe, Mielah, Brynn, Lennon, Lachlan, and Sawyer. Also left to cherish his memory are his mother Jessie, brothers Bill (Chris), and Danny (Sheryl), and brother-in-law Doug Saliga. Gary was predeceased by his father Harry, sister Penny and brother Steve. Gary will also be lovingly remembered by the van Leeuwen clan, including father Bernard mother (Gertrude), brothers Gerry (Cindy), Brad, Larry (Colleen), Leonard (Audrey) and sisters Jacquie and Bernadette. Many nieces, nephews and dear friends will also treasure memories of our beloved Gary especially Darek Dawda and Chris Lawless who spent countless happy times with him at his favorite place in the world - Sunset Beach. Sincere gratitude also goes out to Joe Potenza and Candace Plett for their help in this time of need. Those who knew Gary best would all agree he lived every day to the fullest, savouring each and every moment life had to offer. Indeed our Gary was the eternal optimist who always found the good in everything and everyone; from the simple and beautiful pleasures of nature to the joys of family and everyday life. He was an incredible man with a warm and kind spirit who touched the lives of so many people in so many ways. Words could never express how deeply we mourn for you and how blessed we are to have had you in our lives our darling Gary. A celebration of Gary's will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008 at Grant memorial Baptist Church, 877 Wilkes. Reception to follow at Canad Inns Polo Park, 1405 St. Matthews.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Gary was a generous soul -- affable, positive and charming. Working with Gary at Style Manitoba has left many indelible memories, but when Dawna and I remember him we think first to that lovely night when he was beside Rita or talking about his daughters. He was blessed. So were we all for knowing him. - Posted by: Randal McIlroy (Co-Worker) on: Dec 09, 2008

  • My friend and neighbor Gary, who was so good to me and Roland and even Dave this past summer. We spent an afternoon boating. Gary was just at Roland's too and left him a beer, which now they can have together again. Rita, I'm so sorry. My deepest sympathy. If there's anything I can do such as snow blowing out your driveway. I was very fond of Gary and have lots of great memories. There wasn't anything Gary or you wouldn't do for me but the best was friendship. One day we'll get together and talk. - Posted by: Lori Rotchik (Friend) on: Nov 30, 2008
