Date of Passing: Dec 01, 2008
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBETTY LINDSAY With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Betty Lindsay, on December 1, 2008, after a brief battle with cancer. Betty will be greatly missed by Charlie, her husband of 57 years; daughter, Sharon (Bernie) van Kemenade; son, Jim (Susan) Lindsay; and grandsons, Rhys (Jenn), Lane, and Burke van Kemenade and Bryn, Torrey, and Drake Lindsay; her siblings, Art (Audrey) McFee, Irene (Gerald) Coleman, Pat Appleyard, Shirley King, Ron (Edith) McFee, Keith (Alberta) McFee; brother-in-law, Murray Stewart, sisters-in-law, Chris Paul and Kath Lindsay; many wonderful nieces and nephews; and special friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Pearl McFee; sister Ruby Stewart; and brothers-in-law, Frank McElroy, Don Appleyard and Ron King. Born November 7, 1928 Betty grew up in Grosse Isle, the eldest of the eight McFees. The satisfaction of hard work and the joy of a loving family were values she learned early, and steadfastly pursued throughout her life. After completing her schooling at Grosse Isle, she permit taught at Lake Frances and Sydney, and then attended university. She was working at St. John's Library when she and Charlie were married in 1951. Raising their family, working on the farm and for the community was her main focus for the next few years. In 1965, she began a 30 year career with the RM of Rosser, first as Clerk and then as Secretary Treasurer. During this time, she completed her Municipal Administrator's Certification at the University of Manitoba. Following her retirement, she was appointed to the Capital Region Planning Board where she served a two year term. Never one to sit idle, her life was filled with activities: annual winter vacations, summer camping trips, curling, cooking and baking, card games, and crafts. Mom's service to her community was a major priority in her life as a member of the Grosse Isle Recreation Club, Women's Institute and United Church. She recognized the importance of helping out to preserve the rural community and family unit as both a duty and a privilege. She was never happier than when she was involved in the catering process at the community centre or selling her pies at the Prairie Dog Train. This year, Mom was humbled as a YMCA-YWCA Woman of Distinction for Community Volunteerism. Her six grandsons were her greatest joy! Grandma was their biggest fan at whatever event they participated in: be it hockey, baseball, motocross, music festival or Christmas concert. She especially enjoyed their last camping trip to Moosomin this past summer, and was looking forward to the arrival of her first great-grandchild this January. A memorial service will be held this Friday, December 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grosse Isle Recreation Centre with the Reverend Nancy Finlayson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grosse Isle Recreation Centre or the charity of one's choice. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.
