RODERICK (ROD) MACKENZIE December 18, 1918 December 2, 2008 On Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Seven Oaks Hospital, Roderick (Rod) Mackenzie passed away at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his sons, Doug (Sandra), Craig (Susan), Alan (Marilyn) and daughter Laurel Meredith (Muir) as well as five grandchildren, Theressa Cajapin (Joel), Cheryl Murphy (Kevin), Heather Mackenzie (friend Laokham Phrakonekham), Jamie Lumsden, and Christy Mackenzie and nine great-grandchildren, Jessica, Stephanie, Ayleia, Shawn, Matthew, Corey, Krysta, Alyssa and Talon. Also surviving is Rod's sister Moira Tindal. He was predeceased by his wife Winnifred (Winnie); brothers, Douglas and Charles and sister Glennis. Rod was born in Winnipeg on December 18, 1918 and resided with his parents on Furby Street, he was the son of Annie and Charles Mackenzie. He enlisted with the RCAF in 1941 and served as a Navigator with the RCAF Bomber Command 419 Squadron. He met and married Winnifred Bundy of Worcestershire England in 1943. After the War they returned to Canada to work for Veteran's Land Administration. Rod re-enlisted in 1951 working initially as a Navigation Instructor and then with Search and Rescue until 1964 at which time he began working for Canada Manpower until his retirement at 65. Rod will be remembered as a generous and good provider who lived with conviction and was respected by his co-workers. His sister Moira describes Rod as being very generous to his family. He enjoyed the outdoors taking his family on many camping trips. A favorite pastime for Rod and Winnie was Saturday Night dancing at either the Officers' Mess, the Legion and/or Army/Navy Veterans Cub. In later years Rod remained active. He was a member of several bridge clubs, enjoyed bicycling, walking, golf and cross-country skiing. Took many trips with wife Winnie to visit sister Edna (Connie) in Lakeland, Florida, visiting son Alan and wife Marilyn while they were stationed in Germany and daughter Laurel and family in Summerland and later Vancouver. Enjoyed many social get togethers at son Craig's home near Beausejour as well as golfing, camping, and fishing trips with Craig and his friends and family. After the passing of wife Winnie in 1986 Rod continue to live in his own home at 354 Nightingale Road in Winnipeg until the summer of 2005. He will be remembered at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence and Middlechurch Personal Care Home for his sense of humour and entertaining expressions. Rod always had a friendly greeting and something appreciative to say. Cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest with his wife Winnie at Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg. A small memorial gathering for immediate family and friends will take place at the home of Craig and Sue Mackenzie at a time to be arranged. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzeimhers Society of Canada or the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg.
