Max's grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember their Zaida Max with love and humour. Max was a man who was ahead of this time in his actions and his thinking. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Max was a life-long learner, earning a diploma in Pharmacy in 1940, a Bachelor of Arts in 1993, and later an Honour Arts Degree. Max and Alex Koven ran A M Furniture and Max prided himself on being a fair and honest businessman. He cared about community and people of all ethnic backgrounds. Max played baseball well into his 80s, volunteered for Jewish Child and Family, and loved his family above all. Max's life was celebrated with a graveside funeral on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery. Rabbi Larry Lander of the Congregation Etz Chayim officiated. Max's granddaughter, Cari Satran, spoke for all the family. About 100 people gathered to honour Max's memory. Pallbearers were Eugene Baron, Earl Baron, Leonard Hornstein, Murray Goldenberg, Michael Kay and Moe Pollock. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Fred Shane, Dr. Marvin Shane, Morley Vinsky and Mel Hornstein. Max's family would like to thank everyone who shared stories, expressed condolences and gave generously in his memory.
