JARED FLETCHER MITCHELL Jared Fletcher Mitchell, aged 92 years, passed on peacefully December 2, 2008. Son of Jared Carl Mitchell and Victoria Mitchell (née Mills), he was the beloved husband of 63 years of the late Annette Mitchell (née Eliashevich) and father of John, Richard and Jared. He was born in Winnipeg and raised in North and South Dakota by his mother and step-father following the death of his father, who perished in the First World War when Jared was only ten months old. Adept at sports, he played high school football in the Dakotas and was known for his diving and swimming abilities. Jared studied sociology at Ohio State University, earning a bachelor's degree. During that time he worked as a sportscaster in Cincinnati and later had on-air positions in Chicago and Winnipeg, where he was employed for radio station CJRC. He frequently summered in Winnipeg as a child, in the Main Street home of his grandfather, John Fletcher Mitchell. With the commencement of the Second World War in 1939, Jared returned to Canada permanently from the United States to join the army. Beginning as sergeant he rose to the rank of captain, serving as a tank commander in Lord Strathcona's Horse. Wounded several times following the invasion of Normandy in 1944 he returned to Canada to begin a family with Annette in Rivercrest, just north of Winnipeg. He inherited his grandfather's business, the Winnipeg Printing Co., modernizing its equipment and relocating it from downtown to Ferry Road, adjacent to the airport. During the 1950s he coached the army football team the Weston Wildcats. He was also active for many years in Rivercrest United Church, singing in it's choir and helping with social events. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked in building administration, for Shelter Corp. in the private sector, and later for the Seven Oaks School Division. He was a member of the Mystic Order of the Shrine, Khartoum Temple in the Provost Corps, and for half a century of service he received a lifetime membership. In his middle years he was active in the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Party and counted former premier Duff Roblin among his friends. He will be deeply missed by his immediate family and extended family members including Stacey Piette in Winnipeg and Cindy Devlin in Vancouver as well as many friends in Winnipeg and at his retirement condo in Middlechurch. The family would like to thank Dr. Patel and the staff on the 3rd Floor at Seven Oaks Hospital for all their care. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice. 586-8044
