She was born in Winnipeg, October 5, 1921 to Grace Stewart and Alex Thrasher. As the daughter of a CPR Conductor she travelled the rails from Winnipeg, living in Regina, Moose Jaw and Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, then on to Minneapolis before returning to Winnipeg to complete her formal education. During the Second World War, she worked for MacDonald Brothers, where she met her future husband Donald Smith, whom she married in 1949 and enjoyed a vibrant and loving 50 year marriage. Virginia also enjoyed careers with the CPR and in later years with Eaton's of Canada. Throughout her life she was devoted member of Deer Lodge United Church with over 40 years serving as a volunteer administrator and holding numerous positions in the Church Unit working on many initiatives for charity and the needy. She actively volunteered at Deer Lodge Hospital and the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board. Virginia was truly a caring, compassionate woman always with a smile on her face and kind words for everyone. There were never many cloudy days in her life, a life that she lived to the fullest and her always upbeat personality carried over to her family and many friends. The personal values and principals she lived by are exceptional lessons learned and the wisdom she demonstrated is etched in our memories and will be carried forward in our family for years to come. She will be missed but never forgotten by her son Norman, of High River; granddaughter Casey Marie Smith, of Edmonton; and many other relatives and friends she touched throughout her life. A sincere, special thank you goes out to all the staff of the High River Hospital and to the second floor unit teams for the quality and compassionate care given to mom in her final years. Your level of professionalism is a testament to all, allowing patients to live their lives in a safe and dignified environment in their final years. Your support has been greatly appreciated by the family. There will not be a funeral but a graveside service will be held in Winnipeg at a future date. If friends so desire donations can be made to the Arthritis or MS Society, as these were the organizations closest to mom's heart.
