HERBERT KRISTOFFERSON 1923-2008 On December 1, 2008, at the Gimli Community Health Centre, Herbert Kristofferson, passed away, peacefully, in his 86th year. Uncle Herbie will be fondly remembered by his nephews, Larry, Keith, Ken and Allan Kristofferson; and his nieces, Marlene Riddell, Judy Lindsay and Linda Green. He was predeceased by his parents, Otto (1956) and Johanna (1972); and brothers, Walter (1985) and Harry (1989). Herbie was born on August 18, 1923 on the family homestead in Old Pinawa. In his youth he attended school in Pinawa and worked on the family farm. Following school he worked for the Winnipeg Electric Company at the Pinawa Power Plant. Having grown up during the Depression he developed an understanding of the challenges of the times and an appreciation of the accomplishments he and his family achieved. When his father died suddenly, he took over the farm and remained there for the rest of his life, raising cattle. Uncle Herbie was a good mechanic and was very clever at manufacturing things he needed when they were not readily available, and he was not afraid of hard work. He had a keen interest in aviation, having seen the many bush planes flying overhead from the Lac du Bonnet float base since he was a young child. He enjoyed the many visits from his brother Harry and his nephews, when they flew over from Gimli and landed on the runway he had made for them on his farm. Herbie was a bit of a local historian and was often asked to share his pictures and memories at the Friends of Old Pinawa gatherings held at the old power dam site. He was proud of his Scandinavian heritage and traveled to Norway and Sweden to trace his family's roots. Herbert will be remembered as a kind and gentle man, generous with his time, for he was always willing to lend a hand to those who needed help. We shall always cherish the happy times we shared with him on the farm and remember how much richer we are for having been a part of his life. The family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the nurses and staff of the Gimli Community Health Centre and to Connie, May, Myrna, Lil and Ruth, for taking such good care of our Uncle while he was there. We also thank Dr. Benshaban and Dr. Inglis, for all they have done to care for him. Cremation has taken place and a private service will be held next summer with interment in the Riverland Cemetery.
