JACK WINSHIP Flight Officer Jack (John Jeffrey) Winship, 93, passed away December 4, 2008 at the Riverview Health Centre. During the Second World War, flying officer Jack Winship (28) performed a remarkable feat of airmanship when he flew his Mosquito photographic reconnaissance bomber home on one engine, over 700 miles of enemy held Indo-China jungle. The cooling system of the port engine failed, and Jack cut if off, losing 6,000 feet of altitude while preparing for one engine flying. To keep remaining altitude, he jettisoned 100 gallons of precious fuel. Somehow, he and his flight officer, Peter Haines (20, from London, England), scraped home on one engine and a prayer. Jack was presented with the Distinguished Flying Cross. Jack was married to the beautiful Eleanor (Babe) Rodier. They will be unbelievably missed. We all love you. Arrangements entrusted to: KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson Hwy. 338-0331 Send expressions of sympathy at www.mem.com.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Very sorry to learn of Jack's death even if some time ago. Peter Haines sadly died some many years ago. But his wife Renee is well and lives near Lesley, their daughter, and me in Wimbledon England. It would be great to be in touch with any of the Winship family.
