JOAN SCORER Joan G. Scorer died peacefully on December 5, 2008 following surgery at Grace Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Canon Denys. G. S. Scorer. Their family consists of four children: Timothy (Donna), Andrew, Michael, and Elisabeth; seven grandchildren: Tiffanee (Lawrence), Gavin, Galen (Bonnie), Adam, Paul, Emmalea and Morgan; and three great grandchildren: Emmett, Tobin and Cole. She is survived by one brother, Colin Smith (Joyce) of Broadstairs, Kent. Joan was born in Ramsgate, Kent, UK in 1918. During the war Joan served as an ambulance driver in the area around Ramsgate and Margate and also provided care to children in an orphanage near Windsor. She met Denys when she was church organist and he was curate at St. Luke's Church, Ramsgate. They were married in 1943. The family lived in Hastings and Newhaven, in Sussex, before emigrating from the UK to Canada in 1959. They settled in St. Thomas, Ontario and also lived in Strathroy before moving to Winnipeg in 1972. In Ontario Joan became actively involved in the Anglican Church Women providing leadership in both congregation and diocese. Music was a gift of service for Joan who frequently found herself either on pipe organ, electronic organ or piano accompanying congregational or community worship in places such as Heritage Lodge, Winnipeg, and Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts. In 1994 Joan's volunteer contributions to the Assiniboine community were recognized when she received the Assiniboia Volunteer Appreciation Award from then Premier Gary Filmon and MLA Linda McIntosh. Family was the passion of her life; she had a collection of photo albums that was in itself a family archive, bearing witness to her ninety years of abundant and gracious living. Home for the last years of her life was the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts on Ness Avenue. Her family extend gratitude to all those, both staff and residents, who shared their love and companionship with her for the past eight years. They also appreciate the prompt response of the paramedics, and thank the caring and dedicated staff at Grace Hospital, noting particularly their compassionate professionalism in the final hours of Joan's life. A service of celebration for Joan's life will be held at 6:30 on Friday evening, December 12, main floor of the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts residence, 2300 Ness Avenue, Rev. Ian Mills presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land or to a charity of your choice. Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I had the privilege of meeting Mrs Scorer and and some of the Scorer family several times. I hope the Scorer family will forgive my using this gateway to contact Elisabeth (Lis). Lis and I both worked Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and Lis was my maid of honour in 1979. And I was her bridesmaid in 1981. It would be lovely to reconnect. Can you help?
