June was predeceased by her husband Don (2006) and her mother Emma Thompson (1989). Also predeceasing their mother were four children; a daughter at birth (1959), a son at birth (1963), a daughter Nancy Dawn at 18 months of age (1970), and a daughter Maureen Donna at 33 years of age in 1999. June was born January 2, 1935 in Winnipeg during a blinding snowstorm. Her first few years were spent in Elm Creek, then her family moved into Norwood. She graduated from Norwood Collegiate and received the Governor General's medal, and subsequently graduated from Grace Hospital Nursing School. June and Don were married in 1957 and enjoyed 49 years of marriage. Her nursing career covered duties at several Winnipeg hospitals. Throughout her life she remained active with the Grace Hospital Nurses Alumni. She spent many years volunteering with Girl Guides of Canada and in her later years was actively involved with New Horizons 55+ Club in Gimli. She retired in 1991 when she and Don moved to Gimli where she resided until October of 2008. June and Don enjoyed either part or full time winter life in their Arizona homes and made many lasting friendships from these southern sojourns. The family would like to thank the Victoria Hospital for the outstanding and compassionate care that mom received during her week there. A special thank-you goes to our cousin, Cheryl Baines, who gave freely of her time and friendship and chauffeured mom whenever there was a need. A memorial service to celebrate the life of June Mattson will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler at Henderson Hwy.
