BERTA SCHROTH With great sorrow we announce the passing of Berta Schroth (nee Lange), at the age of 75, on Sunday, December 7, 2008. Berta, the daughter of Emmanuel and Ida Lange, was born on November 12, 1933, in the German village of Gross Kupla, Volynia (today Poland). In 1945, to escape persecution, her mother fled with Berta and her seven siblings, to Germany, arriving in 1947. Her mother died shortly afterwards. Berta always felt this arduous journey, worthy of a Hollywood script, was guided by the hand of God. Berta immigrated to Winnipeg with her sister Olga in 1952. Joining her sister Helen, she worked as a seamstress in the garment district. In 1954 she met and married her husband of 54 years, Theodor Schroth. She was always proud, that with Theo, they were able to undertake the responsibility of sponsoring her father Emmanuel, three brothers Eric, Alfred and Emmanuel, and her two remaining sisters, Martha and Elsa. While wishing to join her siblings in Vancouver, BC, she remained in Winnipeg where she raised her five children. Her grandchildren, Benjamin, Andrew, Jakob, Abigail and Christian were her sunshine. Berta is survived by her husband Theo; sons, Richard (Kim), Alfred (Svetlana) and daughter Eveline (David) of Winnipeg, and son Daniel (Andrea) of Edmonton. She was predeceased by her eldest son John; granddaughter Hailey; sisters, Martha and Paulina, and her parents. Berta was the epitome of generosity - unconditionally caring, and putting the needs of others above her own. Berta was an active member at Mission Baptist Church, where she developed many lasting and strong friendships. She enjoyed visiting family in Vancouver; along with camping and summer outings - including the many summers she volunteered at Camp Nutimik. Berta will be sadly missed. Funeral service will take place on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Mission Baptist Church, 771 Sargent Avenue, with interment in Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Berta requested those who wish to remember her to donate to the Camp Nutimik Memorial Fund, P.O. 34006, RPO Fort Richmond, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 5T5 (www.campnutimik.com).
