HAROLD CHAPMAN MCVICAR It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Harold Chapman McVicar, formerly of Otterburne, Manitoba on December 8, 2008 at the Red River Valley Lodge in Morris at the age of 95 years. Harold was born February 4, 1913 in New Westminster, B.C. when his parents were there on a winter holiday. Harold was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Mary McVicar; his brothers, Warren, Ralph, Allan, and Neil; and his brother-in-law Milton Rigby. He is survived by his only sister Louise Rigby of Abbotsford, B.C.; his brother Raymond (Florence); and his sisters-in-law, Muriel, Aline, and Nancy. He was the very much loved Uncle of many nieces and nephews and their families; Doreen, Grant, Richard, Brian, Paulette, Carol, Richard, Marilyn, Mark, Ross, Janet, Kerry, Bruce, Bev, Bill, and Dwight. Except for the five years he spent in the Armed Forces, Harold was a grain farmer, living on the family farm west of Otterburne with his mother and brothers. In June 1940 Harold joined the Winnipeg Rifles, and later transferred to the Air Force where he flew a Halifax Bomber over France, Germany, and Belgium. He always got his plane and crew home safely, at times under trying circumstances. He was awarded the DFC by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. Harold was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman, and spent many winters with friends and brother Ray hunting deer and moose. He also enjoyed curling, but playing baseball was his favourite. At age 65, Harold retired from farming, and spent several winters in Texas and summers on the farm. In April 1989 he purchased a condo in St. Norbert, where he lived until moving into the Red River Valley Lodge in the year 2000. Cremation has taken place. There will be a private family memorial in January 2009, with interment of ashes at a later date at Otterburne West Cemetery. Arrangements by the Morris Funeral Home. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Red River Valley Lodge for providing a comfortable, caring home for him in his later years. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Harold may be made to the Red River Valley Lodge, Box 507, Morris, MB R0G 1K0.
