HELEN MARJORIE SMITH (nee CREALOCK) On Thursday, December 18, 2008, at the Portage District General Hospital, Helen Marjorie Smith, of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late John Leslie Smith, mother of Linda (Ron) Green, passed away, at the age of 81 years. Helen was born in Portage la Prairie on November 6, 1927, to Statts and Gladys Crealock. She was the eldest of three girls and was raised in the Elsmith District. Helen received her education at Elsmith, High Bluff and Portage Collegiate. She married John Leslie Smith on December 6, 1927. They raised two children, Linda and Larry, on their farm in the Burnside District. Following the death of her husband, Helen moved her family into Portage and began work at the Manitoba Developmental Centre, as a clothing lady. Helen then chose to train to be a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. This career brought her many years of joy. Upon her retirement, Helen proudly continued to maintain her own home, yard and flower gardens. Her home was always open for friends and family to visit. Helen was an active member of the Burnside United Church, the Burnside UCW and now McKenzie United Church. She belonged to the Ruth Rebekah Lodge #3. Helen enjoyed reading, poetry, music, fiddling contests, traveling, dancing, playing piano, cooking and family gatherings. She was an avid fan of curling and the Toronto Blue Jays. She was predeceased by her parents, Statts and Gladys Crealock; husband John Leslie Smith; son Larry Dennis; two sisters, Evelyn Chepil and Laura Medynski; and great-grand- daughter Chelsea Lambert. Helen leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Linda (Ron) Green; three granddaughters, Nancy (Don) Lambert, Allison (Marc) Chapellaz, Tannis (Sheldon) Brown and seven great-grandchildren, Kali, Madison and Brady Lambert, Ainsley and Sophie Chapellaz, Donovan and Shelby Brown. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Helen (Faurschou) Smith and Gladys Smith; two brothers-in-law, Morris Chepil and Walter Medynski; as well as, several nieces and nephews. She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Quesada, the Paramedics and the caring staff of the Portage District General Hospital. Funeral service was held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, with Reverend Marg Scott officiating. Christine Davidson was the soloist with Coralie Arundell presiding at the piano. Pallbearers were: Don Crealock, Brian Smith, Don Lambert, Marc Chapellaz, Sheldon Brown, Jack Smith, and Cliff Locke. Interment followed in the family plot at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
