KEITH CRAWFORD CAMPBELL Peacefully and in no pain, surrounded by the love of his family, Keith Crawford Campbell passed away Friday, December 19, 2008 at the Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his father Bill; mother Lottie (Crewson) and brother Don. He is survived by his bride of 57 years, Marion (Cooper) and their children, Linda (Greg HoldenKiersten and Shayne), Sandy (Gord SparkesCurtis and Carrie), Craig (TerryLauren and Colin), Glen (MargieAdam and Elizabeth) and Leslie (Scott GiffinMelanie, Kaley and Lana). Keith was born in Portage la Prairie on September 13, 1927. Keith worked for MTS starting in 1947 as a Construction Lineman and retired as Personnel Manager Wages Compensation in 1985. He spoke fondly of the days with the system and made many friends there. Retiring at 58 gave Keith time to enjoy the things he loved: travelling to Texas with his bride , the cottage at Delta Beach, golfing, and investing time with his grandchildren. Hockey was a big part of Keith's life. He played with the Portage Terriers Junior team, Portage Plainsman and the Poplar Point Memorials. In 1968 Keith began playing with the Manitoba NHL Oldtimers, true legends of hockey. The team travelled to Germany twice and participated four years in the Charles Schultz Oldtimers tournament in California, winning Gold three times and Silver once. During his youth, Keith was invited to play on four professional hockey teams. As a volunteer Keith gave plenty to the community, coaching and organizing sports teams. During his 50 year residence in St. James, he was one of the founders of the St. James Speed Skating Club, St. James Canadians Junior Hockey Club and assisted in the formation of the St. James Minor Hockey Association. Keith served as the Vice President of the Manitoba Hockey Players Foundation and Executive Vice President of the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association. He was President of the Manitoba Tennis Patrons Association and executive member of Manitoba Junior Tennis program. Keith coached hockey, football and baseball at Deer Lodge (Wpg) and Southside (Portage) Community Clubs and had a lasting influence on many young athletes. Keith was proud of his involvement with the Masons and held his membership since 1950. He was currently active at the Portage Golf Course and Deer Lodge Curling Club. With an unstoppable thirst for knowledge, Keith kept many books on the go . He could answer most questions on Jeopardy and would frequently quote the literary masters. And what a voice! As a past member of a Portage barbershop quartet, Keith loved serenading his grandchildren. Keith always saw the good in people and encouraged his family to do the same. He loved to listen to his grandchildren's stories and always offered up sound advice. He had so much more to tell us and we will miss him very much. The family is grateful to Dr. Y. Kotecha and the staff at Assiniboine Clinic and St. Boniface Hospital for their thoughtful care. Respecting Dad's wishes, a private family service will be held. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of their choice. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Returning from my first visit to the family members in New Brunswick, one of your daughters met me at the train and drove me to your place in Winnipeg. Then, a night at the lake and return home. You and Keith were involved with a class reunion which precluded our getting really well acquainted. A nice visit with Muriel and Agnes, though. We met briefly at the reunion in St. John. I recently ran across a letter from you telling of your trip back to the Maritimes and your visit with Latta. This obituary tells of a wonderful life experienced by you and Keith. This 87 year old fellow, by chance, found Keith Campbell's obituary on his I pad. Kindest regards to all. Irving.k - Posted by: Irving Moore (Second cousin) on: Sep 14, 2013

  • In 1980, on my return trip from New Brunswick, it being my first contact with the relatives back there, one of your daughters met me at the train station. I spent one night at your lakeside cabin, and a day at your home in Winnipeg. You, Marion, and Keith were unite involved with a class reunion, so unfortunately, not a lot of time spent getting to know you two. At the reunion, when disembarking from the tour boat I recall a brief hello. Further, I recently read a saved letter that you, Marion, had written following your journey back to the home place, your visit with Latta and the others. Today, I inserted the name Keith Campbell of Winnipeg into my I pad and found this wonderful write up of his life. Next week I plan to celebrate my 87th. Greetings, Marion. My best, Irving. - Posted by: Irving Moore (My dad was Benjamin Harrison Moore, of Eureka, CA. He was a first cousin of Muriel and Agnes. ) on: Sep 14, 2013

  • Dearest Marion & family, Jim & I were truly sorry to hear of Keith's illness & death. We left for Az. early this year and therefore hadn't even heard that he was ill. We have so many fond memories of hockey, especially the Santa Rosa trips. We have shared many stories of Keith with his MTS co-worker, Sharon Litzenberger, who is a friend of ours from the lake. Bless you all, anytime is a hard time but Xmas seems to make things so much more difficult. Much love to you all Jim & Cynthia Slevin - Posted by: James Slevin (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2008
