FLORENCE EMILY OVERWATER (nee HUGHES) Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother, passed away, peacefully, Monday, December, 29, 2008, at 91 years of age. She was predeceased by her loving husband Jake; infant children, Ernest and Christine; and sisters, Ruby McCrae and Gladys McGrath. She is survived by children, Anne (Al) Aime, Mary (Bill) Tomlinson, Irene (Dick) Spradbrow, Elaine (Grant) Ferguson, Albert (Rose) Overwater, Dini (Stan) Mehler, Tom (Jadwiga) Overwater, Michael Overwater, Margaret (Rene) Ouellette; 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Florence was born in Winnipeg, December 20, 1917. She started her adult career working in the Lt. Gov.'s office. She enjoyed sports and played basketball, along with her twin sister Ruby, for the Blue Eagles women's team. Florence attended a barn dance in Charleswood, which was very much in vogue in the post-depression era. There she met Jake and her world changed. Flo gave up her city life to be in Jake's loving arms. They married and she began her new life as the wife of a market gardener. Soon she learned about wrenches, cows, sugar beet labour, corn, potatoes and even fishing and map reading. Flo was a full partner in the farm operation, while raising all nine of their children. She was active in the church and CWL. Once Flo's children had grown and moved away from her home, she and Jake were able to travel and to visit their children in various parts of the world. Flo always took great pride in seeing her family working together and enjoying each other's company. She stressed the importance of strong family ties, charity and compassion to others, and tried to see the positive in any situation. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd. Those wishing to remember Florence could make a donation to a charity of their choice.
