EMIL MAYER On Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Lakeshore Hospital in Ashern, Manitoba, Emil Mayer, in his 93rd year, formerly of Hilbre, Manitoba. The last of a generation of pioneers to Manitoba's Interlake, Emil was the youngest of four children born to Joe and Amalia Mayer (nee Harnish) and was born in their farmhouse on September 28, 1916. Predeceased by his beloved wife Ruth (Linde) in 1983 and his parents, sister Gertie and brothers Frank and Henry, Emil is survived by his nephew and nieces Herb Middlestead (Joyce), Helen Royko, Gloria White (John) and Audrey Loiselle (Jerry) and nine great-nephews and nieces and their families, as well as Sablin and Florence Linde and their sons John (Karen) and Eric (Karen), and daughter Bev Rohl and their offspring. Emil farmed all his life with his family three miles north of Hilbre before marrying Ruth in 1958 and taking up residence in Hilbre. As the mischievous uncle always quick to tease the youngsters, the family fondly remembers time with Emil at baseball games, local dances, movies, picnics, family gatherings and fishing at the Fairford River Dam. The family would like to thank the staff at Pioneer Manor in Ashern, where Emil resided the last few years, as well as the staff at Lakeshore Hospital for their support and care. In accordance with Emil's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service is planned at a later date. Rest in peace, Uncle Emil.
