MARY EMILIANA CNOCKAERT (BETTENS) December 15, 1906 - January 2, 2009 102 Years Young With great love and fond memories, the family of Mary Cnockaert announces her peaceful passing on January 2, 2009. Mother will be lovingly remembered by her children: Irene (Herb) Clague, Margaret Laurin, Doreen (Bob) Peterson, Denise Taylor (Wes Gow), Ron (Darlene) Cnockaert, Judy Cnockaert and Jane Yachison. Also surviving are her brothers, Eddie and Albert (Bev) Bettens, many grandchildren, great-grand-children and great-great-grandchildren. Mother was predeceased by her husband Jerome; son Maurice Cnockaert; granddaughter Diane Ross; grandson David Taylor; infant granddaughter Jody Taylor; daughter-in-law Mel Cnockaert and son-in-law Bill Yachison; her sisters, Alice Supeene and Margaret Riou. Mother was born December 15, 1906 in Dawson City, Yukon. Later the family moved to a farm in St. Boniface where she met her future husband Jerome. After a few years, with daughter Irene they moved into their own home on Brussels Street in St. Boniface. As the family grew to eight children, with no running water, Jerome in 1945 purchased a larger home on Doucet Street in St. Boniface, where Mary resided until she broke her hip in September 2008. Mother worked at Eaton's and McLeods's until her retirement in 1969. Before Mother lost her eyesight she enjoyed knitting, reading, bingo, playing cards, dancing and going to Eaton's with her sisters and watching I Love Lucy . Years later Mom enjoyed sitting in her rocking chair, talking on the phone, eating Cheezies, fudge, mints, banana sandwiches, with Kleenex and Vaseline in hand (she believed it healed everything). Mother was happiest when family was visiting with her at home. There are no words that can express how much mother will be missed. We can only take comfort in the fact that she is back in the arms of those who passed before her and she is at peace. Mother you are in our hearts and prayers now and always. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Beacon Hill Lodge who cared for Mary. A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be held on Thursday, January 8 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. A private family burial will follow at a later date. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald Street 253-5086
