KARL HUGO KRUEGER, M.D., L.M.C.C., F.I.C.S., Cert. Surg. (Germany) It is with great sadness that we announce that Karl Hugo Krueger passed away peacefully at his home, at the age of 91, on January 8, 2009. He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Eva Margret in 1990. Left to cherish his memory are his sons Stephan and Ralph (Glenda), daughters Christiane (Manfred), Evelyn (Greg) and Birgitta (George); his grandchildren Werner, Simon, Justin, Nicholas, Kirsten, Geena, Stephanie, Tatiana and Brittany, extended family and many dear friends. Karl Hugo was born in Putbus, Germany and spent most of his childhood in Pomerania. After completing his Medical Degree, he specialized in Surgery. Together with his wife Eva and their young daughter, Christiane, he emigrated from Hamburg, Germany to Canada in 1952, eventually setting up his own clinical practice in Steinbach, MB, where he also helped raise his family of five children. His career as Physician and Surgeon spanned over more than 35 years. Karl actively promoted the Arts in Steinbach and Winnipeg. He proudly served on the Programming Committee of the WSO, and attended many theatrical and musical events. Karl travelled extensively throughout the world and often spoke of his many adventures. Memorable summers and even winters were spent at Star Lake in the Whiteshell area, in the company of family and good friends. Karl's family is grateful to Dr. Wilfried Kaethler for enabling Karl to receive hospice care at home for the last few years of his life. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 465 Henry St., Steinbach, MB on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Cremation has already taken place and a private family interment will be performed on January 15, following the service and a fellowship with family and friends. Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach is in charge of arrangements. Ph: 346-1030

  • I admired Dr. Krueger as a young boy. He struck me as highly intelligent both in terms of his practice as a doctor but also as a lover and patron of the arts. I met him at the Steinbach Library two or three years before his death when I did a reading there. He invited me to his house for a drink. We had a lovely, long visit. I learned about many things, including the fact his beloved wife had been an actress in your younger years. I learned of his contacts with people like Pablo Casals and Aristotle Onassis, some accidental, some related to his love of art and his travels to hear music and see theatre around the world. He represented the large, outside world to me when I was growing up in the small town of Steinbach. It's as if he was a conducting wire between the small town and the world. It was always a pleasure, even a relief, to hear him talk in his office, or later in his home, demonstrating his expansive mind and his constant curiosity. He told me, during that visit that he was writing notes toward a kind of "memoir". I think it would be fascinating to read, and I hope there is a chance it comes out one day. - Posted by: Patrick Friesen (Patient as a boy, fascinated visitor in the last years) on: Nov 20, 2012
