GAIL VERNA MADILL (nee SHORTREED) 1924 2009 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend on Friday, January 16, 2009. Gail was born January 27, 1924 in Blackhawk, Chapple Twp. Ontario to Andrew and Mary Shortreed. The Shortreed family resided in Fort Frances, Ontario where Gail eventually met and married John W. Madill. They lived in Thunder Bay and Atikokan Ontario, and eventually made Winnipeg their home. Gail enjoyed her ever growing group of friends, as well as fishing, gardening, baking (butter tarts!), swimming at the Boni Vital pool and curling at the Fort Garry Curling Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed her regular monthly Rummoli group with many of her gal pals over the last 25+ years. Gail was predeceased by her husband John in 1999 and most recently her youngest daughter Terrie in 2006. She was also predeceased by her parents Andrew and Mary, brother Kenneth Shortreed, and younger sister Emily Vandetti. Gail is survived by her sister Winona of Selkirk, brother-in-law Harry Vandetti of Fort Frances, her daughter Karen Lajeunesse Jungkind (Karl) of Lockport, and son Mitchell (Jayne) of Winnipeg, grandchildren Andréa (Danny), Christy (Matt), Sarah, Lance (Bobbie) and Terra and great-grand-daughter Magdalene, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gail recently moved from her home in Windsor Park to the Waverley Retirement Community where she met many new friends. She enjoyed her singing with the Waverley Warblers and the numerous outings around town. Everyone who knew Gail loved her. Gail possessed a wonderful sense of humor, always looking at the bright side of life. She was always thankful, enjoying even the smallest of things and was frequently heard to say that my cup runneth over . The greatest joy in her life was her family and the feeling was mutual. Mom will be so deeply missed, but we know that she is thoroughly enjoying heaven. The family would especially like to thank Annica, Dawn and Rodney and the rest of the wonderful staff at the Waverley. You truly made a difference in mom's life. A celebration of Gail's life will be held at Springs Church, 795 Lagimodiere Blvd. on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Public viewing will be held at 12:30 p.m. A private interment for the immediate family will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Sick Children or a charity of your choice. Rock Fontaine, Funeral Director, in care of arrangements (204) 223-2576 or (866) 499-2601.
