JOHN HYRICH 1935 - 2009 Peacefully on the afternoon of January 12, 2009, after a lengthy illness, John Hyrich passed away at Riverview Health Centre. Dad is remembered by sons, John James of Winnipeg and Jeffrey of Toronto; daughters-in-law, Sylvia and Sharo; grandchildren, Stefanie, Tristan, and Mia; sister Ann; brothers, Fred and Dan; sisters-in-law, Beth, Jean, Gertie, Rita, Gloria, Holly, Alecia, and Marsha; brothers-in-law Ray, Ron, Lindsay, and Amador, and many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2007, his father Onufry in 1984, and his mother Thelma in 1979. Dad was born in Belmont, Manitoba in 1935 and was a school teacher in Winnipeg (in math and social studies) for 39 years until he retired in 1997. He married his wife Ruth in 1962 and she was a loving and devoted wife to him until her own death in 2007. Dad had two main passions in life: sports and travel. When Dad was 15 he had the opportunity to travel to the Maritimes for a curling tournament and that ignited a lifelong passion for travel. Dad loved to curl, downhill ski, and watch baseball on TV. Dad traveled to many places in his lifetime including Mexico, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and all 50 states in the U.S. Thanksgiving was always a special time around the Hyrich household as it was associated with the annual family trip to Fargo, North Dakota for shopping and some rest and relaxation. Dad and Mom made this trip for over 40 consecutive years. Special thanks to the 2 West staff at Riverview Health Centre who provided fantastic care to Dad over the past three years. Their gentle care and kindness in his final days allowed him to leave this world with dignity and grace. Dad we will always remember the good times that we had with you, we will keep those memories in our hearts forever, and we will always love you. Viewing will be held on Friday, January 23, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. followed by a reception. Chapel Lawn 885-9715

  • Mr. Hyrich went to Hawaii one Christmas Break and brought all 28 or 29 of us girls in his Home Room Class, a necklace made of coffee beans. I still have it and wear it. I have thought of Mr. Hyrich a lot over the last 50 years. He was the best teacher in my Grade 9 mind. He was very caring. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
