IRENE RIMKUS (nee MANDZUIK) On Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at Seven Oaks Hospital, Irene Rimkus, beloved wife of the late Joseph Rimkus of Winnipeg passed away peacefully. Irene was born and educated in Winnipeg. She was the eldest daughter of the late Sophie and Sawa Mandzuik. Irene and her husband moved to Montreal in 1940, returning here to Winnipeg in 1978 until her passing. She enjoyed life and did so with a smile. She loved poetry and music, and participated in a string orchestra in her younger years. She also attended Ukrainian school for many years, and was proud of her language and culture. Her ability to speak and write Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and other Slavic languages helped many immigrants make the transition to the Canadian way of life easier while she was in Montreal and Winnipeg. To her family and friends she gave an open heart and a listening ear. And to all, she gave a shining example of courage, determination and faith. We will all miss her dearly. Irene was a member of St. Casimir's Lithuanian Church and the Lithuanian Club of Manitoba. Holding her close to their hearts are her sister, Janet Gingera (Walter) of Winnipeg and sister-in-law Lillian Mandzuik of Thunder Bay, ON; Goddaughters, Audrey Green of Scotsdale, Arizona and Dovile Bakiene of Lithuania; her dear friend Vincent who shared her life with joy and happiness and always stayed by her side; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Irene was predeceased by her husband, Joseph in 1989; her mother and father; sisters, Mary, Rose, Sophie and brother, Michael. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. with Fr. I. Dziadyk, OSBM officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Lowe, Ron Gawiak, Steve Hruden, Ryan Lowe, Jason Mallin and Ross Gingera. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 9Z9. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
