WILLIAM (BILL) SOLODIUK William (Bill) Solodiuk passed away peacefully with his family at his side at Oakview Nursing Home on January 27, 2009. Bill was born on June 16, 1932 in Sarto, MB. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Doran); four daughters, Linda (Cheech) Morelli of Atikokan, ON, Carol Little of Winnipeg, Donna (Tom) Roloff of Winnipeg and Lorraine (Courtney) Murray of Winnipeg and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Mike and Ted Solodiuk and sisters, Olga Martens, Emily Surovy, Mary Pyne, Doris Smolarski and Pauline Storostic and numerous neices and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John Solodiuk and Pearl Greinke; brothers, Steve, Andy, Paul John and Peter; and sister Ann. Billy attended school in Steinbach. He met and married Marilyn Doran, in Winnipeg in 1953. The couple later moved to Fort William, ON and Bill began working for the Parnell Bread Company. When the firm shut down, Bill started a career in the retail business with the Marshall Wells in Port Arthur. In 1967 the family moved to Nipawin, SK where Bill became Manager of the store there. He remained with Marshall Wells until 1971 when he accepted a position with the Hudson Bay Company in The Pas, MB. In 1971 he transferred to the Yorkton, SK store, but that year Bill suffered a major stroke. Though his prognosis was bleak at the time, Bill recovered and went back to work at The Bay at the Winnipeg Unicity store. He worked another 19 years but in 1988 suffered another stroke and never returned to work. He was able to enjoy retired life for a time in Winnipeg and later in Penticton, BC when yet another stroke resulted in life in an extended care facility where he spent the next 12 years. Bill loved people and was a deeply devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a devout Catholic and a 3rd degree Knight. He enjoyed the outdoors, and playing any kind of card game. In his youth he loved to dance and play baseball, and in later years he curled and liked to watch sports on TV. He is fondly remembered for his positive outlook on life, his cheery laughter, his helpfulness and caring for others. The family would like to thank the staff at the Oakview Nursing Home for their kindness and loving care over the years. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass and celebration of Bill's life will be held at Blessed John XXIII Parish, 3390 Portage Ave. on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local Humane Society, Stroke Recovery, or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I never knew this gentleman at all. I went to high school with his brother Peter and was so sad when he died in an accident. I wished I had known him better. If this man was anything like Peter, he was a good person. God Bless the family. - Posted by: Marge (Friend of your brother Peter) on: Jun 06, 2021
