PETER HALAYKO 1912 - 2009 Peter Halayko, of Fisher Branch, Manitoba, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 30, 2009 at the Concordia Hospital, with relatives by his side. He was the youngest son of Paraska and Paul Halayko. At the age of two he emigrated with his parents from the Ukraine. He first lived with his parents west of Hodgson. Later he lived at Rossdale, where he attended Earl Grey School. Peter made his home close to his parents where he lived for many years; enjoying the foods he grew and prepared. During the 1939 to 1945 War he trained in Canada with the Winnipeg Royal Rifles and served in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. After the war Peter returned home on the ship, HMCS Aquitama. He returned to his farm and lived there till he purchased a home in Fisher Branch in the 1980s where he produced his own food. Peter is survived by sister-in-law Sadie; nieces and nephews Olga, Mary, Lily, Walter, Lawrence, Pauline (William), Doreen (Bill), Evelyn, Audrey (Gordon), Sandra (Tim), also many grand-nieces and nephews, friends and acquaintances. Sincere gratitude is extended to staff and doctors of Percy E. Moore and Concordia Hospital, Fisher Funeral Home, the staff at the Chalet and other people at Fisher Branch who helped Uncle Peter. Thanks are especially extended to nephew Lawrence who was very helpful to Uncle Peter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Fisherton Cemetery after the service.
