THOREY CHERNEY April 11, 1928 - February 4, 2009 It is with deep sorrow that our family announces the passing of Thorey at Victoria General Hospital on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2009. Thorey will be greatly missed by her husband of 60 years, Stan; daughter Rhonda (Don); sons, Ronald and Bruce; grandchildren, Justin, Daniel, Jason, Carolyn, Allison, Roslyn; and great-granddaughter Laura; brothers, Peter (Jean) and Magnus (Margaret); sister-in-law Lorraine; as well as numerous nephews and nieces, cousins and many friends. Thorey was predeceased by her parents, Gudrun and Peter Thompson; brothers, Thor, Thomas and Rosevalt Thompson; brother-in-law Gordon Cherney; and sister-in-law Helen Sywak. Thorey was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 11, 1928. She showed great pride in her Icelandic heritage, was fluent in Icelandic, had visited Iceland on many occasions, was a member of the Icelandic National League and served as a long-time secretary for the Icelandic Festival Committee. Thorey graduated with honours from Success Business College in Winnipeg. Following graduation, she worked as the secretary for the base commander at CFB Gimli. After the base closed, she worked as a human resources officer for Canada Manpower in Gimli and Selkirk. Upon her retirement, Thorey and Stan enjoyed many wonderful winters together in Texas. Thorey often travelled with Stan and Rhonda to far-away destinations. She was always willing to drop everything and embark upon her next great adventure. Having grown up along the shores of Lake Winnipeg, Thorey took to the water at an early age, becoming an avid swimmer. Her athletic prowess was shown on the curling ice. Throughout her years as a curler, she skipped many teams to victory, claiming trophies along the way. In her later years, Thorey enjoyed playing cards and games, especially with her friends at the Winnipeg Beach Seniors Club and while wintering in Texas. Thorey could always be counted upon to knit sweaters, socks and mitts for family and friends. Thorey was a compassionate and loving wife and mother and the best friend anyone could have, never failing to bring a ray of sunshine to others with her mirth, laughter and smiles. She will be sadly missed by the many whose lives she touched. The family extends its gratitude to the staff at Gimli and Victoria hospitals for the kind care she received. To celebrate Thorey's life, a funeral service will be held at Gimli Lutheran Church, 50 Third Ave., on Saturday, February 7, at 11:00 a.m. Pallbearers are Justin and Jason Cherney, Don Svendsen, Bradley, Brian and Randall Thompson. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Gimli Community Health Centre, 120 Sixth Ave., PO Box 250, Gimli MB, R0C 1B0; attention: Thorey Cherney Fund. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli, in care of arrangements.
