DAVID M. SILVERBERG Following a truly inspirational battle with cancer, David passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre on January 26, 2009. Funeral services were held on January 27, at the Chesed Shel Emes and graveside at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi A. Altein. Pallbearers were Jack Lazareck, Morris Henoch, Norman Silverberg, Shim Goldberg, Rabbi Charytan, and Meyer Kravetsky. Born the eldest of three boys to immigrant parents, Mayer and Hentza, David was predeceased by his brothers Ernest and Morris. Family was very important to David, who lovingly cared for his mother after his father's death and his brothers in their later years. As an engineer for the Federal Government, David spent many years designing Airports in the province with the major focus on runways. He loved acquiring knowledge and had varied interests, which made him a great conversationalist. Dave read a number of daily papers, articles and reports and always kept up with the financial markets. His amazing mind was keen throughout his 94 years. David was involved in his community. He was a lifelong member and Past Master of Northern Light Prince Rupert's Masonic Lodge No 1. He served on the committee which planned and developed the Masonic Temple on Corydon Avenue. Dave gave of himself unselfishly throughout his life for his synagogue, The House of Ashkenazie, holding various positions and performing extensive duties on its behalf. His religion was a part of his daily life. David studied Judaism. As well, he had a vast knowledge of the history of all the synagogues in the city. His knowledge was unparalleled and sought after by others of the faith and the Rabbis. David's gifts to his community and religion extended far beyond giving of his time and knowledge. He was a quiet, often anonymous, philanthropist. His gifts touched over one hundred and fifty charities and foundations. Dave leaves to mourn his cousins, especially, Shirley Raikles-Goldman, Jack Lazareck and Sharon Smith, who loved and supported him, his loss is also mourned by his friends. The family would like to thank Kildonan Medical Centre, CancerCare Manitoba, WRHA Palliative Care, especially Tammy Lee Rogalsky, Riverview Health Centre, and a special friend, Saul Spitz. Donations in memory of David Silverberg can be made to the charity of one's choice. In David's passing, he leaves his community of Winnipeg, truly richer for his giving and caring spirit.
