GORDON MCGILVERY DOUGLAS It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Mac Douglas on January 20th, 2009 at The Oaks Senior Care Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. Mac's memory will be forever cherished by his son Lorne and daughter-in-law Dora in Christchurch and grandchildren Carl in Melbourne, Anna and Troy in Christchurch and Roberta in Brisbane as well as nieces and nephews, Linda Foster (nee Coghlin) (Bud), Laurie Coghlin (Mary), Kelly Beamish (Edie), Stewart McDonald (Mary-Ann) in Winnipeg and Sheila Bell (nee McDonald) (Don) in Coulter, MB and their families and other family members across Canada. Mac was predeceased by his wife of 57 years Dorothy Dotte (nee Stokes) in 1999 whom he dearly missed. He was also predeceased by his sisters and their husbands, Dorothy Dobie Beamish (Norrie) and Jean McDonald (Colin), sister-in-law Isabel Coghlin and brother-in-law Murray Coghlin. Mac was born on April 14th, 1916 in Winnipeg and lived there all his life apart from a few years in his younger days in Sudbury, ON. He attended Linwood School in St. James for both primary and high school education. He was a keen curler all his life and a long time member of Deer Lodge Curling Club and in later years a golfer at the CFB Winnipeg golf club. He was a long time member of Ducks Unlimited and served as the secretary for the local branch. He enjoyed his cottage and the boating, fishing and snorkeling it provided at West Hawk Lake for over 25 years. His employment history included many years at Monarch Lumber Co., North American Lumber and as an independent agent for Woodlands Lumber in Red Lake, ON from which he retired in 1981. He and Dotte made their home on Deer Lodge Place in St. James for 47 years before moving to the Courts of St. James where Mac lived for 10 years. There were many trips to New Zealand to visit family and get to know his grandchildren. When unable to live alone his family asked him to move to Christchurch which he did in 2006 where he could see more of his grandchildren as young adults. It was wonderful to have him close after so many years. The staff at the Oaks Senior Care Centre became close friends and family as well and their loving care for him made his last three years of life special. His ashes will be returned by family to rest beside his beloved wife Dotte at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
