Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN DRABINIASTY September 24, 1909 - February 11, 2009 Peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, John passed away at the Victoria General Hospital at the age of 99. He was predeceased by his wife Maria (nee Tkachuk) and is survived by daughter Diana. John was born in the Village of Bychkiwtsi, Chortkiw district, Ukraine to parents Marko and Anastasia. John came to Canada in 1927 settling in Thunder Bay, (formerly Ft. William) Ontario and later in Hamilton, where he was able to find employment. After recovering from an accident in which he lost his right hand in a weaving mill, he opened and operated his own retail business for two years. John and his wife made one more move, this time to relocate in Sandy Lake, Manitoba and later to Winnipeg. While in Winnipeg he and his wife were employed with housekeeping duties at St. Andrew's College for two years. After that he remained self-employed until health forced him to retire at Lions Centre on Sherbrook Street, in Winnipeg. John was an active volunteer at the Age and Opportunity Centre for a number of years. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Interment to follow at a later date. Donations may be made in John's memory to St. Andrew's College at the University of Manitoba or the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. Hello Diana, I am assuming I have the right Diana.I found this on line as I often check the passages of the Free Press.I pass on my most sincere condolances as I know how bad you must feel as I lost my Mom 2 years ago and Dad 10 years ago.You can e-mail me rdirckx@shaw.ca if you like. I tried to call you .My home phone in Edmonton is 780-484-6444.My buddy Brian Van Iderstine who you taught passed away 9Jan 09 . My prayers are with you, Ray Dirckx.
