MICHAEL BENSON After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our dearly beloved husband, father and grandfather on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the age of 71 years. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Jackie; his son Robert; daughter Debbie (Norm) and their children, Michael, Kimberlee and Katelyn. Michael is also survived by his brother Rob; and sisters, Barb Couture (Paul), Terry Carroll (Pat), Beverley Bauche, Lynne Heywood, Rosemary Hebert (Denis); mother-in-law Rose Gibson - to whom Mike was like a son; sisters-in-law, Elaine Johnson and Hazel Losky (Larry) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Marjorie Benson. Mike was the proud owner of Corydon Hardware which he owned and operated for over 35 years and for 10 years previous to that he worked side by side with his father Edward. Mike was pleased to have his son Robert join him 30 years ago to work alongside and is now proud to have Rob carry on the business. He was a longstanding member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5808 of which he served as Grand Knight and District Deputy. He was also a 40 year member of the Winnipeg Executive Association and also belonged to the Rotary Club of Winnipeg. Mike enjoyed the outdoors and activities such as hunting, fishing, golfing and spending many fun filled days with family and friends in the backyard pool. He looked forward to time spent at the cottage in Minaki. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren who always put a smile on his face and made him laugh. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 20 at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, with Rev. Msgr. Ward Jamieson, V.G., presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9.
