The eldest of five children, she was born on December 22, 1916 to Dan and Bertha Pokrant on a farm north of Rosenfeld. She married Edward Sommer on June 28, 1938, and moved to Ed's farm north of Dunn Centre, North Dakota. They had two children, John Harold and Connie Mae (who died in infancy). In the spring of 1945, Ed died of leukemia. With the responsibility of the family farm and her small son, she decided to sell the farm and move back to Rosenfeld. She moved to Ebenezer Manor in Altona in 1993. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, she took up residency in Eastview Place in Altona in August 2003. She is predeceased by her husband, Edward, daughter Connie Mae in infancy, her parents Dan and Bertha Pokrant, sister-in-law Ruth Pokrant and brother-in-law Al Schmidt. She is survived by her son, John (Erica) Sommer and her three granddaughters, Lisa (Jon) Hepworth, Krista (Chris) Brown and Rachel (Stuart) Holden and one great-grandson, Noah Brown. She is also survived by her siblings: Harold (Dorothy) Pokrant, Martha (Robert) Wonnick, Walter (Lorraine) Pokrant, and Hedy Schmidt. She enjoyed playing cards, drinking a ½-glass of beer and visiting. She made the best oatmeal cookies, cinnamon buns, cabbage rolls, wareneki, and beautiful petit-point pictures. Her granddaughters will remember her for her love of going out for dinners, her funny night cap, forced afternoon naps, and how she used to make them watch Dallas. A memorial service for Elinor was held Friday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Rosenfeld. The family would like to thank Dr. Kliewer and the staff at Eastview Place for their excellent care. A special thank you to Chaplain Peter Bartel who offered her much comfort and conversation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John Lutheran Church or the Eastview Place Chaplaincy Program in Elinor's name.
