Born: Jan 16, 1949
Date of Passing: Feb 18, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAWRENCE MICHAEL MAZUR January 16, 1949 February 18, 2009 It is with a very heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear husband Lawrence on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at the Health Science Centre at the age of 60 years. Lawrence will be forever remembered by his loving wife Stephanie of 39 years. He is also survived by his brother Bob (Marie); his sister Mary (Gordon); and nieces and nephews Shannon, Bob, Stacey and Christopher. He was predeceased by his parents Nick and Stephie. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Lawrence spent many memorable summers and weekends in the country near Beausejour at the farms of his maternal grandparents and his paternal grandmother. Lawrence began a very illustrious career with the St. James Assiniboia police department as a dispatcher in June of 1969. After amalgamation, once the Public Safety Building was made wheelchair accessible, he moved downtown where he was quickly promoted within the Communications division and then on to become Systems and Procedures Analyst. Lawrence's last task with the Winnipeg Police Service was setting up and completely organizing the centralized Evidence Control Unit. After 35 years, in February 2004, Lawrence decided it was time to retire. Over the years Lawrence was involved with various organizations and served on the Board of Directors of the Mid Canada Dog Shows during the time that he and Stephanie bred and showed Miniature Schnauzers. He had a passion for police memorabilia and served on the Board of Directors of The Winnipeg Police Museum for many years and for some time prior to his hospitalization served in the capacity of Secretary. For many years Lawrence was involved in the organizing of the police (and friends) presence at the St. Andrews Society Men's Dinner. When asked why he was involved with a Scottish association, he replied he had been christened McMazur by a previous Winnipeg Police Chief who was president of the St. Andrews Society at the time. At the most recent dinner Lawrence was presented with a certificate of appreciation by our current Chief of Police. He was very proud and honoured by this presentation as he considered Keith a very good friend after having worked with him over the course of his career. Lawrence made very many lasting friendships through his association with this dinner every fall. Lawrence had also taken up sailing 10 years ago and was a fierce competitor. He enjoyed many wonderful wins at regattas in Chicago, Victoria, Montreal, Kingston and Ottawa as well as those in Manitoba at Pelican Lake, Falcon Lake, and Gimli. Lawrence was instrumental in bringing The Mobility Cup to the Pelican Lake Yacht Club at Ninette in 2004. This regatta brought disabled sailors from as far away as Japan. Prior to his passing, Lawrence was looking forward to sailing this summer on Pelican Lake. He always maintained it was the most peaceful place to sail. In keeping with Lawrence's wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held. I would like to thank the wonderful staff on GH4 at the Health Science Centre, and a very special thank you to nurses Davilyn, Leonora, and Shirley and doctors Jason Sneath, Ken Van Ameyde, Anthony Lewis and Justin Wong. In memory of Lawrence, donations may be made to The Pelican Lake Yacht Club Disabled Sailing Program in care of Dennis Collingwood, Box 132, Ninette, Manitoba, R0K 1R0.
