Date of Passing: Feb 15, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBLANCHE SIGRID ELAINE SUMMERS Peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2009 in the arms of her first born child, Blanche Sigrid Elaine Summers passed away after a short but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 84 years. Blanche will be dearly remembered and sadly missed by her children, Cole, Lance (Lori) (Kenora, Ontario) and Kelly (Bruce Shelest), and her beloved grandchildren, Jordan (Sherry) and Taylor Shelest. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Danny in 1999; parents, Nels Johnson and Marie Johnson; step-mother Peggy Johnson; brother Stuart Johnson; aunt Emma Warwick and Uncle Joe Warwick. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Blanche moved to Winnipeg at the age of three where she grew up on St. Anthony Street in West Kildonan. She met the love of her life and soul-mate Danny and was married in 1946. Danny's hockey career gave them the opportunity to live in many cities in the United States before settling back home in Winnipeg and raising their family in Silver Heights in 1951. For several years Mom remained in Winnipeg raising the children while Danny was away for the winter months toiling in the Pro Hockey ranks. Blanche lived a wonderful adventurous life travelling extensively with Danny and enjoying the summer months at many different lakes before building their own cottage at War Eagle Lake. There they spent their summers surrounded by family and friends enjoying life to the fullest and making everlasting memories with all who joined them. After being a full-time mother, Mom then took on a part-time job at Holt Renfrew which she enjoyed immensely. After Dad retired, they continued to travel and enjoyed their winters in Fort Myers, Florida. Mom was a wonderful cook and baker and enjoyed to be in the company of family and friends. She loved to entertain and was a great friend to many. For over 50 years she belonged to a bridge-club with her closest girlfriends and looked forward to the fun and laughs they would share over each game. At Mom's request, cremation has taken place. A private family ceremony will take place at a later date. A special thanks to Dr. Elkin, in-home palliative care and staff at Sturgeon Creek II Retirement Residence and Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion of Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Blanche's name to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. We love you Mom Grandma
