YKE (IDA) WESTRA (nee HOOGENBERG) July 18, 1913 - February 25, 2009 The family is greatly saddened to announce the sudden passing of Ida Westra, beloved wife of Hoite, Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 95 years. Mom is survived by her husband of 76 years, Hoite Westra, sons Harmen (Anne), Wicher (Gwennyth), Anno (Susan Katanna), daughters Kay (Sieboutje) Jonkman, Antje (Peter) Ryzebol, Alida (John) Stolpman, 22 grand-children, 43 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, namely Ayla and Maija Langford, sister Alida Moed and many other extended family members. She was predeceased by her son-in-law John Jonkman in 1998 and daughter-in-law Juliette Westra in 2000. Mom and Dad and their six children came to Canada in 1955 from Friesland in The Netherlands. They lived at 408 Woodward Avenue for many years until they moved into the Thorvaldson Retirement Centre two years ago. In her younger years, Mom enjoyed speed skating and she was always proud to tell you about her skating days. She had a passion for knitting different articles of clothing and she spent her lifetime taking care of her family. One of her greatest joys was when family members visited weekly so that she could make them a cup of coffee and serve Dutch cookies. Mother always enjoyed traveling with our dad to different parts of Canada, Europe and Colorado, to visit family on many different occasions. One of Ida's proudest moments was looking forward to and celebrating her 75th Diamond Wedding Anniversary on November 25th, 2007, and she looked as beautiful as ever as shown in the picture above. Most of the family members and friends attended this very special occasion. Special congratulations were received from the Queen of England, Prime Minister of Canada and numerous other dignitaries. A local television station interviewed Ida and Hoite to mark this event, while the couple smiled and held hands. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Ida's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers at the Thorvaldson Retirement Centre for their care and compassion during her time there. Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, in Winnipeg, at 10:00 a.m. God saw you getting tired When a cure was not to be He put his arms around you And said, Come unto Me CHAPEL LAWN 885-9715
