DOUGLAS DUTHOIT STEWART B. Comm. (Hon.), Lth. April 3rd, 1925 to February 22nd, 2009 Doug passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, February 22nd, 2009 with family at the Weatherby Pavilion in White Rock, British Columbia. He is survived by his brother Frederick of Winnipeg, Manitoba and by his nephew Malcolm of Surrey, British Columbia. Doug was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He matriculated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in 1942 and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree in 1946. After working in the insurance industry for several years, Doug made a life changing decision to attend Wycliffe College in Toronto, Ontario, where he graduated in 1955 with a Licentiate in Theology. Ordained Deacon in 1955 and Priest in 1956, he spent his first years in Manitoba as the Assistant Curate, St. John's Cathedral in Winnipeg, then as the Minister of the Church of Ascension in Stonewall followed by St. Peter's in Balmoral. He was a Canon of St. John's Cathedral from 1968 to 1973. His career spanned parishes throughout Western Canada; most notably, St. Peter's and St. Chad's in Winnipeg, St. Timothy's in Edmonton, St. Christopher's in West Vancouver and finally St. Michael's in Surrey where he retired in 1992. Doug was a long time member of the Mason's Millennium Lodge in Winnipeg. He enjoyed sport, playing cricket in his youth, and was a passionate fan of the Blue Jays. He loved singing and had an avid interest in music, especially opera. Doug was a voracious reader and writer, and a defender of human rights. Always ready for a debate, Doug had a profound impact on the lives of those that intersected his. In keeping with Doug's wishes, cremation in Vancouver will be followed at a later date by a private family service and interment at St. John's Cathedral in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
